Fair Lawn, NJ – Ten Firefighters Hospitalized After Late-Night Crash on Rte 208

Bergen County, NJ (October 17, 2025) – On Thursday, October 16, ten firefighters were hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash on Route 208 in Fair Lawn, Bergen County. The collision, which occurred around 9:00 p.m., involved a minivan and a car traveling northbound.

According to reports, the minivan contained a large quantity of pool-cleaning chemicals, including hydrochloric acid. Firefighters were exposed to these hazardous substances while extricating the driver, who sustained serious injuries. Six firefighters from Glen Rock and four from Hawthorne were taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation.  Authorities confirmed that all firefighters were later released as a precaution.

The driver of the minivan was hospitalized with injuries that were reported to be serious. It is unclear whether the car’s driver required hospitalization. Bergen County police department and emergency responders remain on the scene investigating the circumstances of the crash, including whether speed, driver error, or other factors contributed to the incident.

We extend our thoughts and best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to everyone injured in this accident.

Injuries After Hazards & Chemical Exposure in Vehicle Accidents

Physical injuries from vehicle accidents can be intensified when hazardous chemicals are involved. Collisions may cause typical trauma such as cuts, bruises, fractures, whiplash, or head injuries, but exposure to chemicals like acids, cleaning agents, or other toxic substances can worsen these injuries. Even minor abrasions or scrapes may become serious if chemicals come into contact with the skin, potentially leading to burns, irritation, or infections.

Accidents involving vehicles carrying hazardous materials can lead to serious injuries for drivers, passengers, and first responders. Exposure to chemicals such as acids, cleaning agents, or other toxic substances can result in respiratory issues, chemical burns, eye injuries, and skin irritation. Inhalation of fumes may cause coughing, difficulty breathing, or long-term lung problems, while direct contact can lead to burns or tissue damage requiring medical treatment.

Victims often require immediate emergency care to address both collision-related injuries and chemical exposure. Treatment can include wound care, decontamination, respiratory therapy, and specialized medical monitoring to prevent complications. Ongoing rehabilitation may also be necessary, particularly if the chemical exposure caused burns, respiratory issues, or other long-term health effects that require continued attention.

Beyond the physical consequences, chemical-related accidents can have serious psychological impacts. Experiencing a crash involving hazardous materials can lead to anxiety, stress, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), especially when victims or first responders confront dangerous substances while performing rescues. Mental health support and counseling often play an important role in recovery, helping victims cope with trauma and regain a sense of safety and normalcy after the incident.

Bergen County, NJ – Injuries Reported After Crash at Lee Pl & Newman St

Bergen County, NJ (October 15, 2025) – Early Monday morning, October 13, a motor vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Lee Place and Newman Street in Hackensack, New Jersey. The collision resulted in injuries and required emergency medical attention.

According to preliminary reports, emergency responders arrived at the scene to provide assistance and transport those injured to nearby medical facilities. The circumstances of the crash, including the exact number of vehicles involved and the severity of the injuries, remain under investigation by the Hackensack Police Department. Authorities continue to assess the scene and gather information to determine contributing factors.

We hope those involved in the accident make a swift recovery.

Common Causes of Traffic Accidents in Bergen County

Traffic accidents in Bergen County often happen due to a combination of driver behavior, road conditions, and congestion in busy areas like Hackensack. Common causes include distracted driving, such as using phones or other devices; speeding, which reduces reaction time and increases the severity of collisions; and failure to yield, particularly at intersections like Lee Place and Newman Street.

Other frequent factors contributing to traffic accidents are adverse weather conditions, such as rain, snow, or fog, which can reduce traction and visibility, making it harder for drivers to react in time. Poor visibility at night, due to inadequate street lighting or glare from oncoming vehicles, also increases the risk of collisions. Roadway hazards, including potholes, debris, uneven pavement, and ongoing construction zones, can force drivers to make sudden maneuvers, often leading to accidents. Multi-vehicle collisions are more likely to occur in areas with heavy traffic, frequent pedestrian crossings, and cyclists sharing the roadway, such as busy intersections in Hackensack.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable, as they lack the protection that vehicle occupants have, making even low-speed impacts potentially dangerous. Even crashes that appear minor at first can result in delayed injuries, including whiplash, concussions, fractures, or internal trauma, which may not be immediately obvious. Prompt medical evaluation is therefore critical to identify and treat these injuries early, reducing the risk of long-term complications.

Accurate documentation of the accident and any resulting injuries is equally important, both for proper medical care and for legal purposes. Victims should seek professional medical attention as soon as possible, photograph visible injuries and the accident scene, and maintain detailed records of all treatments, prescriptions, diagnostic tests, and follow-up visits. Proper documentation not only supports the recovery process but also strengthens any potential compensation claims, ensuring that victims can pursue justice and financial support for medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering.

Consulting a New Jersey car accident lawyer is highly recommended for anyone injured in a traffic accident. Experienced attorneys can help victims navigate insurance claims, determine liability, and pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and long-term care needs.
