What to Do After a Car Accident in Hackensack

Being involved in a car accident can be overwhelming and stressful. However, taking the right steps immediately after the crash can help protect your safety and legal rights.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Ensure safety first. Move to a safe area away from oncoming traffic, such as the shoulder of the road or a nearby parking lot, if your vehicle is drivable. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers of the accident and reduce the risk of secondary collisions. If it’s dark or visibility is poor, use reflective triangles or flares if you have them to make your vehicle more visible.

  2. Call 911. Contact emergency services right away to report the crash. Clearly explain your location, the number of people involved, and whether anyone is injured. The police will arrive to document the scene and create an official accident report, which will be essential for both insurance and legal purposes. Request medical assistance for anyone who may be hurt, even if the injuries appear minor

  3. Exchange information. Once it’s safe, exchange details with the other driver(s), including names, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers, and insurance information. Avoid discussing fault or making statements that could later be misinterpreted. If there are witnesses, try to get their contact details as well.

  4. Document the scene. Use your phone to take comprehensive photos and videos of the accident site. Capture the position of the vehicles, the extent of the damage, skid marks, nearby traffic signs, weather or road conditions, and any visible injuries. This visual evidence can play a fundamental role when determining liability or negotiating an insurance settlement.

  5. Seek medical attention. Even if you feel fine, it’s important to see a doctor as soon as possible after the crash. Some injuries, such as concussions, whiplash, or internal trauma, may not show symptoms immediately but can worsen over time. Getting prompt medical evaluation not only protects your health but also creates a record linking your injuries to the accident, which is important for any future claims.

  6. Notify your insurance company. Report the accident to your insurer as soon as you can, providing accurate and detailed information about the crash. Avoid speculating about fault until all facts are reviewed. Be honest and thorough; delays or inconsistencies in reporting can complicate your claim or delay compensation.

  7. Consult a car accident lawyer. After an accident with injuries, speaking with a knowledgeable New Jersey car accident attorney can be invaluable. A lawyer can explain your legal rights, gather and preserve crucial evidence, communicate with insurers on your behalf, and help you seek compensation for your medical bills, lost income, property damage, and pain and suffering.
