What Evidence To Collect After a Crash in Hackensack
If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident in Hackensack, gathering strong evidence can play a critical role in protecting your rights and supporting any insurance or legal claim:
Vehicle damage photos and videos. Detailed images of cars, license plates, skid marks, debris, traffic signals, and road conditions help show how the crash happened and support insurance claims.
Injury photos. Take pictures of visible injuries immediately after the crash and during recovery to document pain, swelling, or medical procedures.
Driver and insurance info. Collect names, phone numbers, license numbers, license plates, and insurance details for everyone involved.
Witness information. Gather names and contact info of independent witnesses to support your version of events.
Police report details. Record the responding officer’s name, badge number, and report number, which are often used by insurers and attorneys.
Medical records. Keep ER notes, doctor evaluations, tests, prescriptions, and therapy records to show the extent of injuries.
Repair and damage records. Save repair estimates, invoices, towing receipts, and rental car costs for property damage claims.
Insurance communications. Retain emails, claim numbers, settlement offers, and call notes to protect your rights during the claims process.
Medical documentation is equally important. Even if injuries appear minor, seeking prompt medical evaluation creates an official record linking your injuries to the crash.
Keep copies of discharge papers, diagnostic results, prescriptions, and receipts for any related expenses.
In addition, avoid making recorded statements or accepting settlement offers before fully understanding the extent of your injuries and damages.
Carefully collected evidence can significantly strengthen a personal injury claim and help ensure that accident victims pursue the full compensation available under New Jersey law.

How Can a Police Report Help My Injury Claim in New Jersey?
A police report can be a critical part of documenting your injuries and supporting any legal or insurance claims following a car accident. The report provides an official record of the collision, including details about the vehicles involved, road conditions, time and location of the crash, witness statements, and observations from responding officers. It may also include citations issued, accident-scene diagrams, and notes on contributing factors such as weather, traffic signals, or road hazards, all of which can be valuable in establishing liability.
Having a police report ensures that your account of the accident is formally recorded, which can strengthen your case if questions arise about fault or damages. Copies of the report, along with photographs of the scene and your injuries, medical records, and witness information, create a comprehensive record that can help demonstrate the direct connection between the crash and your injuries.
Properly maintaining these records also helps prevent disputes over what occurred and can support claims for long-term, delayed, or ongoing medical issues resulting from the accident.
Additionally, police reports can corroborate statements to insurance companies, providing an official source that validates your account of the incident. Insurance adjusters often rely on these reports when determining fault, evaluating claims, or negotiating settlements. Failing to obtain a copy or not referencing the report accurately can weaken your position and reduce potential compensation.
Consulting with a New Jersey car accident attorney can help you understand how to use the police report and other documentation effectively in your claim. Proper documentation increases the likelihood of obtaining full compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
