Pedestrian Accident Causes in Bergen County

Pedestrian accidents often occur where vehicles and foot traffic intersect, and multiple factors can contribute to these incidents. Sidewalk incidents may happen when vehicles drift or mount the curb, particularly near driveways, construction zones, or areas with limited visibility.

Crosswalk collisions are also common. Even when pedestrians are crossing legally, distracted drivers, speeding, or failure to yield can result in serious injuries. Busy intersections, sudden turns, or lane changes increase the risk of pedestrian collisions.

Low visibility conditions, such as nighttime, bad weather, or dark clothing, further raise the likelihood of accidents. Impaired driving, including alcohol- or drug-related impairment, is another major risk factor. Pedestrians and cyclists may also be distracted by cell phones or headphones, reducing their awareness of nearby vehicles.

Pedestrian accidents can cause serious, life-altering injuries, including fractures, head trauma, internal injuries, and long-term mobility impairments. Even collisions at lower speeds can result in lasting physical damage, such as chronic pain, limited range of motion, or permanent disability. Beyond the physical harm, victims often experience significant emotional and psychological effects, including anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress.

The financial consequences can also be substantial, with costs for emergency care, surgeries, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical treatment adding up quickly. Combined, the physical, emotional, and financial impacts of a pedestrian accident can dramatically affect a victim’s daily life, independence, and overall well-being.
