Common Injuries in Bergen County Traffic Accidents
Traffic accidents in Bergen County often result in a wide range of injuries, many of which vary depending on the speed of the vehicles, the type of collision, and whether occupants were wearing seatbelts. Even accidents that appear minor can cause injuries that develop gradually, which is why medical evaluation is always recommended after a crash.
One of the most common injuries reported in local collisions is whiplash, caused by the rapid back-and-forth motion of the head during sudden impact. This type of soft-tissue injury can lead to stiffness, headaches, reduced mobility, and pain that may worsen over the hours or days following the crash. Whiplash is especially common in rear-end crashes, which frequently occur on busy roads such as Route 4, the Garden State Parkway, and Interstate 80.
Another frequent type of injury is a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Even without a direct blow to the head, the force of a collision can cause the brain to move inside the skull, leading to dizziness, disorientation, memory issues, or nausea. More serious head injuries may involve loss of consciousness or bleeding, requiring immediate medical treatment.
Back and spinal injuries are also regularly reported in Bergen County crashes. Herniated discs, nerve compression, and lumbar strain can occur from sudden impact or from the twisting of the body during a collision. These injuries often lead to long-term pain, limited motion, and the need for physical therapy or extended medical care.
Fractures and broken bones are another concern, particularly in collisions involving rollovers, significant side impact, or pedestrians. Arms, wrists, ribs, and legs are especially vulnerable when bracing for impact. Even low-speed crashes can cause fractures if the force is concentrated in a small area.
Additionally, internal injuries, such as bruising to organs or internal bleeding, may not display symptoms immediately but can become life-threatening if untreated. Seatbelt-related injuries, like bruising across the chest or abdomen, are also common, though seatbelts remain critical for preventing far more severe trauma.
Because symptoms can appear slowly, Bergen County medical professionals emphasize timely evaluation, accurate documentation, and follow-up care to ensure that hidden or delayed injuries are identified and treated appropriately. Also, consulting a New Jersey car accident lawyer is highly recommended for anyone injured in a traffic accident. Trustworthy attorneys can help victims navigate insurance claims, determine liability, and pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and long-term care needs.

Bergen County, NJ (November 18, 2025) – On Tuesday, November 18, at approximately 5:11 a.m., a Hasbrouck Heights police officer was hospitalized following a serious crash with another vehicle at the intersection of Franklin and Terrace Avenues.
Preliminary reports indicate that Officer Johanna Sanchez’s police vehicle entered the intersection with a green light when a vehicle from Air Culinaire Worldwide failed to stop at a red light, resulting in a collision.
Both the officer and the other driver, a 64-year-old man from Hackensack, were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Officer Sanchez was later released.

We extend our hopes for a full and speedy recovery to both drivers involved in this collision.
Compensation After Collision in Hasbrouck Heights
Traffic accidents in Hasbrouck Heights and across Bergen County can lead to serious injuries, long-term medical care, and significant financial and emotional challenges. Even collisions that appear minor can have lasting effects, including chronic pain, limited mobility, and ongoing medical needs.
Victims of accidents caused by another driver’s negligence, failure to obey traffic signals, or reckless behavior may be entitled to pursue compensation to help offset these unexpected burdens.
Compensation typically includes medical expenses, such as emergency care, hospital stays, surgeries, rehabilitation, medications, physical therapy, and ongoing treatment for lasting or permanent injuries. Lost income or diminished earning capacity can also be claimed if injuries prevent the victim from returning to work or reduce their ability to earn income in the future.
Victims may also pursue pain and suffering damages, which account for the physical discomfort, emotional distress, and reduced quality of life caused by injuries. In severe cases, compensation can cover emotional trauma, long-term disability, or permanent injuries. If property was damaged, such as vehicles or personal items, victims can also seek reimbursement for repair or replacement costs.
In addition, victims may be eligible for compensation for rehabilitation-related expenses, such as counseling, occupational therapy, or home modifications needed to adapt to new limitations. Legal claims can also address transportation costs for medical appointments or specialized care. Documenting the accident thoroughly, including medical records, photographs, and witness statements, is crucial in establishing liability and maximizing compensation.
Consulting with a car accident lawyer ensures that all potential damages, including less obvious long-term costs, are properly considered and pursued.
